When did Christmas become so Commercialized?

Do you remember when Christmas was about celebrating the birth of Christ? Now in days to appeases those of all faith or nonbeliever they taken the name Christ out of the holiday when marketing product for the seasons. For example you can no longer by a Christmas tree it a holiday tree. Even on television , they no longer show Christmas specials they show Holiday specials. This is not done in order to be politically correct, this is all about marketing and money. The proof that Christmas has lost it religious value stem from this year Black Friday. In Long Island ,New York, a massive crowd so anxious to save money trample over employees, killing one and injuring others, and where not at all remorseful.
The footage is sickening, after the police arrive an ask the shoppers to leave, they get outraged with the police. They are actually on video fuming about having to leave saying things such as “ we stood out here for hours….” Or “ Only one person died, I don’t really understand what the problem is..” they were other workers and shopper who where injury as well when the store open including a 8 month pregnant lady. The store reopen at 1 pm but as one worker said “ Its, was hard for me to work that day, I look at everybody as if they , were the one who killed my friend.”
Incidents like this have been occurring for the past couple of years with Black Friday events. There have been little old ladies step on and push, and fights that break out over toys, that kids my play with only one time. This to me speaks volume about our culture. We are in the middle of a recession, with many of families homeless due to foreclosure, hungry, and many waiting in need of help from government assistant. Does a television, cell phone, and clothing hold that much of an appeal to us to go through so much in order to save a little money.
Where are the people, who just want to spend time with their families? How many of us need to cancel Christmas and pay or bills up to date. We have life so backwards and we have no one to blame but ourselves. We want to be like the celebrities we see on TV. I know people right now with a real coach purse and she on food stamps. I seen men with nice clothes, nice cars, the latest cell phone still living at home with their mothers. It time for us to get real, grow up and stop playing make believe.

I am tired of waiting for the dvd to come out?

I love going out to see movie in the theater, and I keep an open mind and try to watch a little of everything. I will admit that I do go out more to support Black films that I believe are quality. The reasons being, that I like to see stories about people who I can relate too. Some have historical educational values that make you think, and remember a time an America that was not that long ago. Others or just meant for your entertain so I try to support them all because if nobody supports them, then the quality black film will not be made. Recently, I had been waiting for October 24th to come so I could see the new Noah’s Arc movie, however that wait would be in vein, because its only being shown in 6 major cities. The closes one to me was over 8 hours away in another state. Now I realize that when they were trying to put together a demographic for this movie, a heterosexual black female and her heterosexual friends where probably no consider. However, the movie has been selling out along with preorder of the February 3rd, 2009 release date. There are other blogs of disappointed people who wanted to see this movie as well and are awaiting the DVD, yet now other theater brave enough to take a chance on a black gay romantic comedy.
The only reason why I can imagine this film was not being pick up by your local AMC, Regal and Cinemark theaters would be the film content. As sad as it is the United States is liberal enough for a black president (Go Obama!), but still cannot respect or try to understand people of different life styles. Enzian Theater was where I was expecting the film to be showning because they host a lot of independent film and gay films but as you can guess they’re not. I was surprise because the mission statement on there website reads Enzian theater exists to entertain, inspire, educate, and connect the community through film. They first black romantic gay comedy and it not showing anywhere in the state of Florida who dropped the ball on booking this one!
This is not the first movie theater have underestimate they draw the movie had on consumer. The Film Talk to Me was an excellent movie that again I had to wait for the dvd release to see. The story is about a Washington D.C. radio personality Ralph "Petey" Greene, an ex-con who became a popular talk show host and community activist in the 1960s. The film was nominated for 7 awards and walk away with 4 including Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture (Theatrical or Television), Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture, and Best Ensemble Cast. The film in my opinion was very inspiring, educational, and uplifting something that is not that common in our film today.
Another example would be the movie Phat Girlz starring Monique had the same dilemma. This time around the movie was another romantic comedy about An aspiring plus size fashion designer struggles to find love and acceptance. At this time of release Monique who is the star of the film was at the top of her game. The queens of Comedy had just came out and she was everywhere, yet the film never made it in the theater of Oviedo where I was living at the time and I had to wait for the dvd.
All these film are completely different from each other except they are what society label “A Black Movie’. This means that the content is made only for blacks or that only we would find it entertaining. This is what is so frustrating about the whole industry and people like me who want to go out in see these films in theaters. I wonder what people label “I am legend’ since Will Smith was playing the last man on earth. I also wonder who is in charge of saying which film will play where. America is changing and it about time we allow ourselves to get rid of these labels, so movies and other form of media becomes available for everyone enjoyment.

NAME: Tiffany Godwin

OCTOBER 27, 2008 MMC 1000 ESSAY NO. 2

Answer the following questions (type answers on this document), save the file, e-mail it to Professor Ken Carpenter, and post the questions and answers on your blog.

1. Have you enjoyed reading the Wall Street Journal? Explain why you have enjoyed it, or why not.

Answer: No, I believe it because I am of the age where I rather go online or watch television in order to keep up with what is going on in the world.

2. How has reading the newspaper helped you learn about Mass Communications media? Explain, and give some examples of what you’ve learned.

Answer:
As far as the article that I read on the web, the Wall Street Journal has many informative topic that keep you a brisk to what going on in every industry. However, as I stated before I am not a fan of reading the news paper the old fashion way.

3. Compared to traditional textbook-based study and learning methods, is reading the newspaper a better or worse educational experience? Expand your answers with details and examples.

Answer:
It really 50/50 I believe we are learning more useful information by talking and discussing the wall street journal in class. Yet I believe that textbook education and lecture about current events would have been better and more in-depth.

4. Has the reading assignment changed your behavior, i.e., your daily schedule, your study habits, your desire for news and information?

Answer:
No, But it is affecting my grades, as a single mother, full time employee, and full time student I don’t have time to sit down in read a paper every day.

5. Are the weekly quizzes an effective way to measure what you’ve learned by reading the Wall Street Journal? If yes, why? If no, why? Add suggestions for other ways to measure learning.

Answer:
NO but please review answer number three.

6. How likely are you to renew your subscription to The Wall Street Journal after this semester? Give an expansive answer, with reasons.

Answer:
That at this point in time I am undecided. The Wall Street Journal does offer a lot of information that will be very useful when it come to any writing or current event assignment. Plus I like the internet version. If Possible I would probably just maintain my Internet portion of my subscription and save a lot of trees. The method of folding and fighting with the paper is not my idea of a good time. I prefer the flip free version of the Internet. However If the decide to switch from the old fashion paper to more of a glossy magazine style I would defiantly renew my supscription.

Why America doesn’t read
Written by : Tiffany Godwin

It had been a long ass day of completing the necessary footwork to register for the fall term. I find myself amongst my peers in a line that could be possibly longer then the wait to get inside heaven’s gates. We were all bored as hell! Fortunately the ice finally broke when someone pose the question, “Who are you taking this semester?” A total bitch fest emerged about past professor and previous course which kept us entertain and kill time.
At the end of the day I knew who I didn’t want to take for biology and algebra, but damn how can every English class suck! Now maybe Phil Gramm was correct we might be a nation of whiners, and we might be going through a mental recession. However with America falling behind in subject like science, math, and technology; one would assume that we could master our official language that we speak and text every day. Notice that reading is left out like the commas and proper indentation and little George’s writing assignments.
It takes reading and writing skills to become proficient in any language. Nationwide Americans are not reading as much as we use to. This is not a news flash reading in all its forms books, magazines, news papers, even blogs have been on a steady decline. The reason behind this could be any number of theories, but my hypothesis is that kids are learning in school to hate reading. The reading list for middle school and high school has never been updated to require kid to read what people they age read for fun today. For example if the home work assignment was to read the from the Twilight Saga series or Gossip Girl , those kids that never showed interested in reading may become advent reader, because they can relate and enjoy the storylines.
I can testify to this theory because my reading habits form because of one book. My mother read a lot of scandalous drama fill books so when I pick up her copy of Terry McMillans “Mama” I been a reader every since. I read fiction and nonfiction. I read books by authors of all races on all different topics. This help me to be more knowledgeable and a insightful as an individual.
I also read a lot of magazines. My favorites are Essence, Jane, Cosmo, and Shape. These magazines every month are like mini college crash course. Beginning with Essence it’s like a current African American Humanities class, Jane is women studies lecture, Cosmo serve as Human sexuality and mating rituals guide line, and finally Shape is health ,diet, and nutriention review. That equate to 12 college credits a month worth of current useful information a month.
Then for my inner Politian I love the Orlando weekly and Wall street Journal. The Orlando weekly breaks down everything that goes on in Orlando. The Politics, crime, and the underground music scene are written in a way that easy to understand yet entertaining. The Wall street Journal has such a wide variety of information that I feel a little smarter every day. In fact the WSJ is so good that If Sarah Palin read the journal everyday for a month she would finally be able to answer question on her own.
My point is simply, reading has many function. It entertains as well as educated as so that we can all be well rounded. The less we read the faster we become a nation of apathetic people, who will continue another four years of Bush. Inclosing reading doesn’t suck, your English teacher methods might so read and beat the system.
